Cheyenne Mountain Wins Colorado Girls 4A State Title by Eight Points

The 2020 Colorado Girls 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC) in Thornton, Colo.

Cheyenne Mountain used their impressive depth to secure the overall team title with a final score of 348, only eight points ahead of two-time defending champion Rampart (340). Cheyenne Mountain’s swimming championship title is the second team championship for the school this academic year and marks the 99th team title in school history.

The meet began as Rampart’s Claire Timson (25.99), Johanna Miller (29.45), Laelle Brovold (25.72), and Lindsey Immel (22.88) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:44.04 ahead of Mullen (1:45.51) and Cheyenne Mountain (1:46.56).

Niwot’s Mary Codevilla cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:49.31 as the only swimmer in the field to crack the 1:50-barrier. Mullen’s Chase Davison was second in 1:50.27 while Rampart’s Laelle Brovold took third in 1:53.24.

Cheyenne Mountain’s Caroline Bricker dominated the 200 IM, winning the event by over three seconds in a final time of 2:02.03 for a new Class 4A record. Arvada West’s Anelise Hedges (2:05.40) and Monarch’s Katey Lewicki (2:06.79) rounded out the top three.

After taking second in the 50 free last season, Immel found herself with the gold medal this year after splashing-and-dashing her way to the wall in a quick 23.53. Silver Creek’s Madison Black sprinted to second in 24.08 and 24.32 was fast enough for Timson to claim third place.

Rampart’s Maggie Buckley dominated the 1-meter board for the second-straight year, posting a final score of 529.65 for the win. Coronado’s Lauren Gryboski dove to second with 522.15 points as Arvada West’s Geneva Pauly took third with a total score of 455.75.

After swimming the fly leg on Rampart’s winning medley relay, Brovold was back in the water and flew to the top spot in the 100 fly with a final time of 56.66. She just edged out runner-up Celia Webster of Monarch who took second in 56.85 and Grand Junction’s Sarah Cook raced to third in 57.22.

Immel proved her sprint talent by successfully defending her state title in the 100 free, sprinting to the wall in a swift 50.32 to win by nearly two full seconds. George Washington’s Emily Kahn (52.26) and Wheat Ridge’s Kate Peterson (52.91) finished second and third, respectively.

Codevilla, who finished second in the 500 free in 2019, crushed the event this year to win her second individual gold medal of the meet in a final time of 4:57.37 as the only athlete in the race to dip under the five-minute barrier. Silver went to Cheyenne Mountain’s Clare Sanderson in 5:05.76 and bronze went to her teammate Frances Hayward in 5:08.00.

Mullen’s Gabrielle Zinis (24.69), Claire Chahbandour (23.79), Lindsey Sowitch (24.53), and Davison (23.10) combined to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:36.11, well ahead of the rest of the field. Rampart finished second in 1:37.56 and Cheyenne Mountain finished third in 1:38.34.

Lewicki powered home to the wall in 54.28 to win the 100 back for the second-consecutive season. Timson was back on the podium after finishing second in 56.13 while Dakota Ridge’s Elsa Huebsch raced to third in 57.04.

Not too long after winning the 200 IM, Bricker was back in the pool to win the 100 breast after getting her hands to the wall the quickest in 1:02.13. Davison was right behind her in 1:02.40 for second while Dakota Ridge’s Kira Hobbs finished third in 1:03.45.

Dakota Ridge’s Huebsch (53.07), Sophia Hemingway (54.40), Hobbs (52.19), and Melinda Johnson (52.89) concluded the meet by winning the 4×100 free relay in 3:32.55. They were five seconds ahead of the field as Grand Junction took a distant second in 3:37.25 and Broomfield was third in 3:37.26.
