Canadian Trials, Day 5 Prelims: Summer McIntosh, Mary-Sophie Harvey 1-2 in 400 IM as McIntosh Drops 200 Back
Summer McIntosh and Mary-Sophie Harvey finished 1-2 in prelims of the women’s 400 individual medley Wednesday at Bell Canadian Trials. McIntosh passed up a double by scratching the 200 backstroke.
McIntosh, who has set two world record and narrowly missed two in the first four days in British Columbia, went 4:40.93. As she has all meet, she kept her powder dry in prelims. It’s led to fireworks before in finals.
Harvey was second in 4:41.02, followed by Mabel Zavaros’ 4:42.02 and Ella Jansen in 4:44.37. Jansen is already through to Worlds. The top three are under the Worlds A cut even in prelims, while McIntosh will have eyes on the 4:24.38 world record she set in Toronto at Olympic Trials. She’s the reigning Olympic champion in this event. Jansen finished 11th in Paris.

McIntosh entered the week looking for a fifth individual event. Brushing within a second of Katie Ledecky’s 800 freestyle world record seems to have made that choice easy, hence eschewing a 200 backstroke that has a more crowded global field.
Without McIntosh and Kylie Masse, the 200 back is wide open. Teen Madison Kryger was quickest in prelims at 2:11.42, .04 seconds ahead of Zavaros, who will scratch the 400 IM at night to put all her eggs in the 200 back basket. The auto qualifying time is 2:11.08.
Delia Lloyd was third in 2:13.04. It’s not Ingrid Wilm’s preferred distance, but she’s in the mix at 2:13.77.
On the men’s side, 200 IM runner-up Tristan Jankovics was second in his preferred IM distance, going 4:22.26 in prelims. Lorne Wigginton, who is still looking for a trip to Singapore, was first in 4:20.18. It was a ways back to Collyn Gagne and Eric Brown in the 4:26s. They’re all aiming for 4:17.48.
Blake Tierney and Cole Pratt are set for another battle in the 200 back. Tierney was the top seed in 1:59.54, .13 seconds ahead of Pratt, who got the better of him in the 100 back. Francis Brennan is the third seed in 2:0092, followed by Ethan Ekk’s 2:00.99. It’ll take 1:58.07 for an auto cut.
