Canadian Olympic Trials: Kelsey Wog Adds Second Win in 200 Breast
Kelsey Wog might not be the headliner for the Canadian women’s delegation. The Winnipeg native may not have traveled the most common path to Olympic swimming glory.
But Wog is going to be a factor come Tokyo in a couple of events for the burgeoning Canadian program.
Wog won the 200-meter breaststroke Tuesday at Canadian Olympic Trials. It’s her second win in four days at the meet and third Olympic event. She already had an A cut, but reinforced that with a 2:23.40 to win the event.
“I guess I’m happy for how it went for it being the third day of racing in a row,” Wog said. “I was definitely hoping to go a little bit faster, and I think I’m still able to, but after the third day of racing, I can’t complain.”

Second was Kierra Smith in 2:25.73. That’s shy of an A cut she already had entering the meet. She’ll miss out on Tokyo, though, given that Sydney Pickrem was pre-selected to the games with a time of 2:22.63. Pickrem scratched the swim today to focus on the 200 IM Monday and 400 IM Wednesday.
Third in the 200 breast was Avery Wiseman, the 18-year-old going 2:26.85. Florida State’s Nina Kucheran was fourth in 2:27.54.
For Wog, it’s a third event on her Olympic program. And while the 22-year-old University of Manitoba grad may not have the pedigree some of her national teammates, she’s one to watch in Tokyo.
“This past year and a half has been pretty crazy,” Wog said. “Training has been pretty sporadic until about January when I was able to start getting in the pool every day, twice a day and put in the work. It feels really good to get the job done here. It still doesn’t feel real, and I’m looking forward to the next couple of weeks.”

Mack Darragh was easily the class of the field to win the event in 1:58.10. But he fell short of his seed time, which was two tenths off the Olympic A standard. A 1:56.48 is required for automatic passage to Tokyo.
Second was Montana Champagne, cracking two minutes in 1:59.34. Patrick Hussey was third, leading three 2:00-points.
