Cameron McEvoy, Cate Campbell Top Sprint Frees During Prelims
Cameron McEvoy and Cate Campbell picked up top times in the men’s and women’s 50-meter frees at the 2016 Japan Open prelims.
Cameron McEvoy, ranked second in the world in the men’s 50-meter free with a 21.44, paced prelims in 21.80. James Magnussen clocked in second in 22.44 with Japan’s Junya Koga taking third in 22.65.
Cate Campbell, the top-ranked swimmer in the women’s 50-meter free with a 23.84 from Australian Nationals, led the way in the prelims of that event with a 24.65. Teammates Shayna Jack (25.43) and Bronte Campbell (25.46) placed second and third. Miki Uchida was the fastest from Japan in 25.68.
Kosuke Hagino, the top-ranked swimmer in the world with a 1:55.07 from Japanese Nationals, cruised to the top seed in 1:59.39 in the men’s 200-meter IM. Juran Mizohata placed second in 2:01.64 with Daiya Seto, ranked eighth with a 1:57.95, earning the third seed in 2:01.73.
Kanako Watanabe topped the women’s 200-meter IM prelims in 2:13.05, while Sakiko Shimizu turned in a 2:13.39. Miho Teramura wound up third overall in prelims with a 2:13.83.
Emi Moronuki checked in with the top time in the women’s 50-meter back in 28.26. Hong Kong’s Stephanie Au placed second in 28.58 with Australia’s Kaylee McKeown posting a third-seeded 28.68.
Australia’s Josh Beaver claimed the top seed in the men’s 50-meter back with a 25.57. Masaki Kaneko took second in 25.69 with Junya Hasegawa posting a third-seeded 25.70.
Natsumi Hoshi took the top seed in the women’s 100-meter fly with a 59.86. Tomoyo Fukuda (1:00.00) and Yukina Hirayama (1:00.37) placed second and third in qualifying.
Results from the men’s 100 fly, women’s 200 breast and men’s 200 breast are not available.
