Four new Olympic Trials cuts were earned in tonight’s session of the Speedo Sectionals in Buffalo, New York.
Ridgefield Aquatic’s Andrew Bornstein dominated the 200 breaststroke on his way to the Olympic Trials cut. The 15 year old finished in 2:18.27. Second place went to Scarlet Aquatic’s Eric Materniak in 2:25.48 while Cougar Aquatic’s Joseph Scerbo finished third in 2:27.61.
Chelsea Pier’s John Montesi and unattached Hudson Carroll both earned the Olympic Trials cut in the 100 backstroke. Montesi blasted the 57.19 standard, touching in 56.84, while Carroll just slid under it, finishing in 57.12. Fourteen year old Vincent Marciano of Morris County was third with a 57.46.
The top three men in the 50 free were under the 23.29 Trials cut. Hitting the standard for the first time was Buffalo Area Aquatic Club’s third place finisher Michael Dugan in 23.23. Swimmin’s Drew Modrov won the event in a 22.76. Wyatt Ubellacker, swimming unattached, touched second in 23.13.
Chelsea Piers Aquatic Club was first to the wall in the women’s 200 medley relay. Kelly Montesi, Mary Christensen, Amelia Sicignano, and Bridget Semenuk touched in 1:57.65. Asphalt Green’s Krystal Lara, Carly Fried, Nicole Aarts, and Alessia McGowan finished second in 1:59.40. Ridgefield’s Marcella Maguire, Lindsey Gordon, Hannah Snyder, and Sara Al Khatib claimed third with a 2:00.68.
Ridgefield finished first on the men’s side with a 1:48.04 from the team of Kieran Smith, Bornstein, Brian Valedon, and Liam Riebling. The Town of Tonawanda Titans’ Allan Collins, Matthew Marsh, Evan Graesser, and Kyle Griffin were just behind in 1:48.80. Victor Swim Club’s Daniel Burke, Noah Stevens, Kai Wisner, and Jacob Zitz finished third in 1:50.42.
SOLO’s Bryanna Cameron won the women’s 200 butterfly in a time of 2:16.05. Victor Swim Club’s Makayla Sargent was a quarter of a second back in 2:15.30. Third place went to Lauryn Johnson of Long Island Aquatic Club in 2:16.74.
Though three tenths off her best time, Wilton YMCA’s Ky-lee Perry cleared the Trials cut in the 50 freestyle with a winning time of 26.07. Unattached Caitlin Kelly and Berkeley’s Claire O’Mara finished closely for second and third, stopping the clock at 26.45 and 26.47.
Mary Christensen of Chelsea Piers dominated the 200 breaststroke, touching in 2:38.47, over three seconds ahead of Asphalt Green’s Sophia Zhang in 2:41.69. Wilton YMCA’s Emma Holmquist finished third in 2:42.07.
Scarlet’s Matea Samardzic and Ridgefield’s Marcella Maguire both repeated their existing Trials cuts in the 100 backstroke as the two finished in 1:02.15 and 1:03.22. Central Jersey’s Caroline Gmelich finished third in 1:03.64.
Samardzic later won the 400 freestyle with a 4:20.47. Berkeley Aquatics’ Natalie Ward finished second in 4:21.40. Cameron was third in 4:21.63.
Upper Valley’s Kristian Hansen led a trio of men to 4:05s in the 400 freestyle, as he stopped the clock in 4:05.28. Asphalt Green’s Aaron Glas was second in 4:05.80, while Ridgefield’s Smith was third with a 4:05.98.
Central Jersey Aquatic Club’s Annemarie Schnoor, Caroline Gmelich, Kathryn Petrone, and Helen Grossman won the women’s 400 freestyle relay with a 3:55.63. Mary Mckenzie-Grier, Aarts, Alessia McGowan, and Krystal Lara combined for a 3:57.18 to place second for Asphalt Green. The Asphalt Green B squad of Charlotte Krevitt, Luiza Silveria, Zhang, and Isabel Gormley were third in 3:59.77.
Scarlet Aquatics claimed the men’s 400 freestyle relay in 3:39.07 with the team of Jonathan Gomez, Leighton Maters, Eric Wong, and Philip Kang. Liam Picozzi, Timothy Maggs, Ryan Board, and Everett McNair were second for the Adirondack Bluefins in 3:39.17. Collins, Marsh, Graesser, and Griffin were third for the Town of Tonawanda Titans with a 3:39.30.
Asphalt Green has 363.5 points to lead the women’s team standings with Berkeley in second with 315. For the men, Scarlet has 434 points and Ridgefield has 225 points to hold second.
