Breaking: New American Record From Breeja Larson in 100 Breast at SECs
ATHENS, Georgia, February 21. AFTER clocking a 57.76 this morning during prelims, Texas A&M’s Breeja Larson served notice that her NCAA and American record of 57.43 from last year’s SEC Championships could be in trouble.
This evening, she realized that potential by blazing her way to a ridiculously fast time of 57.28. She went out in 27.00 and came back home in 30.28. Her 27.00 is the fastest 50-yard breaststroke time ever, just ahead of the 27.09 that Molly Hannis used when she pushed Larson to her previous record of 57.43. The previous top time ever by an American had been a 27.11 from Megan Jendrick.
The only time faster in the 50-yard breaststroke is a 26.96 from Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson last year at FG Senior State Championships in March 2013.
