The Rhode Island Interscholastic League Championships were held on Monday in Providence. Bishop Hendricken High School claimed the team crown with 384 points. Barrington High School finished in second with 334 points, followed by the Wheeler School in third (224 points), Portsmouth High School in fourth (136 points) and Cumberland High School in fifth (111 points).

Bishop Hendricken’s depth proved critical to their victory. They won only one of the relays and had only one individual state champion—Lucas Stencel in the 100 backstroke, but in a true team effort, they had fifteen different boys score in their individual events. Barrington was led by senior Harry Homans, who claimed individual state titles in the 200 free and 100 fly and junior Ethan O’Connor, who doubled up with victories in the 50 and 100 freestyle. The two also swam legs on both of Barrington’s state title relays.

Despite the early start to the timed finals session, the Barrington boys got off to a quick start, with
Homans, Ben Noonan, Aidan Lane and O’Connor putting up a 200 medley relay time of 1:35.35. Bishop Henricken (Lucas Stencel, Grant Dator, Aidan Blanchette, Mike Lupino) finished second in 1:40.64, with the Wheeler School (Troy Feng, Daniel Zhou, Harry Martin, Will DiStefano) joining them on the podium in 1:44.28.

Homans’ speedy morning continued. He led the field from start to finish in the 200 freestyle, registering a final time of 1:38.39 and earning himself Automatic All-American status. Bishop Hendricken’s Dillane Wehbe earned the silver in 1:43.94, and East Greenwich’s Jacob Hack finished third (1:45.46).

Charoho Regional High School’s Matthew Stanley won the first of his two individual titles of the morning with a 1:52.11 in the 200 IM. Lane picked up the silver in 1:54.53, and Stencel earned bronze (1:56.87).

O’Connor claimed the first of the sprint crowns when he stopped the clock in the 50 freestyle in 21.78, just ahead of Wheeler’s Andrew Mungovan (21.94) and Narragansett’s Theodore Evans (22.03). O’Connor completed his sweep of the sprint events in the 100 freesyle, getting his hand on the wall first in 47.19, with Wehbe taking the silver in 47.88, and Evans collecting a second bronze in 48.95.

Homans collected his second individual victory of the night in the 100 fly. The senior posted a time of 49.15, fast enough for All American Consideration. Prout freshman Wesley Rea picked up the second place points with his time of 50.80, South Kingston High School’s Ean Kiely grabbed the final spot on the podium (52.07).

The distance crown was claimed by the sophomore Hack, who earned the top spot on the podium with a 4:43.24. Second place went to Bishop Hendricken’s Michael Ryan (4:47.10), and third to Ryan’s teammate CJ Sheldon (4:52.01).

Bishop Hendricken earned its lone relay gold of the meet in the 200 freestyle relay when Lupino, Blanchette, Sheldon, and Wehbe combined for the victory in 1:29.35. Wheeler School (Ben Cech, Will DiStefano, Harry Martin, and Mungovan) grabbed second place (1:31.41) and Barrington (Andrew Barton, Luke Gorham, Gabe Arriagada and Noonan) finished in third (1:32.32).

The 100 backstroke proved to be a battle of the seniors, with the top six finishers all competing in their final state championship meet. Stencel got to the wall first in 51.64, followed by Czech in 52.69, and Lane in 52.84.

Seniors also staked their claim to all three spots on the podium in the 100 Breaststroke. Stanley earned his second gold medal of the morning, finishing well ahead of the field in an Automatic All-American time of 55.76. He was followed by his teammate Jack Benavides in 58.85, with Noonan completing the senior sweep of the breaststroke in 1:00.34.

In the final event of the day, the Barrington boys (Ben Vesey, Lane, O’Connor and Homans) finished the meet with a victory in the 400 Free Relay (3:10.54). Second place went to Bishop Hendricken (Stencel, Ryan, Sheldon, Wehbe– 3:15.68) with Wheeler School (Czech, Feng, Zhou and Mungovan–3:20.26) claiming the bronze.
