Big Ten Men’s Championships, Day 4: Indiana Wins Title as Owen McDonald Continues to Impress
The Indiana Hoosiers have secured the Big Ten title in men’s swimming and diving for the fourth consecutive season and seventh time in the last nine years. They entered the concluding session of the meet leading by 282.5 points over Michigan, with Ohio State sitting in third place, and Zalan Sarkany extended the lead with a win in the 1650 freestyle before Owen McDonald won his third individual title of the meet in the 200 backstroke.
Two events after that, Indiana made one final statement with a sweep of the top-four spots in the 200 breaststroke, with Josh Matheny and Jassen Yep both recording sub-1:50 performances. Indiana capped off the meet with a dominating victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The session also included the 100 free, 200 butterfly and platform diving.
Indiana finished with 1579 points while Michigan beat out rival Ohio State for second, 1148 to 1140. USC (878) and Minnesota (794.5) rounded out the top-five.

1650 Freestyle
An expected big final night for Indiana began with Zalan Sarkany going wire-to-wire in the 1650 freestyle. USC’s Krzysztof Chmielewski tried to push the reigning national champion in the early stages of the race, but Sarkany was far superior in the middle portion of the races as he opened a lead of more than six seconds by the 1000-yard mark.
Sarkany would pull away from there to finish in 14:38.01, a half-second behind his season-best time that ranks No. 8 in the country. With further sub-14:40 efforts at remaining conference meets unlikely, Sarkany will likely try to defend his national title from the fastest heat of the event at the NCAA Championships but in lane eight.
Ohio State’s Mason Edmund closed well to place second in 14:45.81, with Chmielewski fading to third in 14:46.87. Chmielewski’s race was the first of a busy session, with the 200 fly final to come later in the evening. Also under 14:50 were Minnesota’s Bar Soloveychik (14:48.67) and Ohio State’s Sam Campbell (14:49.25).

200 Backstroke
The top swimmer of the meet has been Owen McDonald, who had already secured first-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 back and guided Indiana to a dominant win in the 400 medley relay. Now, McDonald has completed the sweep of his individual races by getting to the wall first in the 200 back. He finished in 1:37.15, crushing the Big Ten meet record of 1:38.22 set by Hoosiers star Brendan Burns two years ago. McDonald now ranks No. 3 in the country in the event behind Florida’s Jonny Marshall and Texas’ Hubert Kos, who is the Olympic gold medalist in the 200-meter back and McDonald’s former teammate at Arizona State.
Indiana gained 28 more points in this final as freshman Miroslav Knedla captured second in 1:39.26. Knedla went out fast and held off a late charge from Ohio State’s Cornelius Jahn, who came in third at 1:39.50. Michigan’s Jack Wilkening ended up fourth in 1:40.34.

100 Freestyle
Ohio State’s Tomas Navikonis broke the Big Ten meet record previously held by Blake Pieroni in the 200 free Friday evening, and now he has secured a second conference title in the 100-yard event, coming from behind with a 10.55 final length to take down U.S. Olympian Matt King. Navikonis came in at 41.55, entering his name into the national top-15 in the event while ending Indiana’s winning streak that began the session.
The Hoosiers did place 2-3, however, as King clocked 41.73 and Dylan Smiley came in at 41.85. Wisconsin’s Taiko Torepe-Ormsby also broke 42 (41.91) while Michigan’s Gal Groumi, who tied Smiley for the top qualifying mark in prelims, came in fifth (42.01).

200 Breaststroke
The Indiana Hoosiers all but secured the Big Ten title with a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 200 breast, but the main show came with the top-two swimmers as Josh Matheny overtook Jassen Yep with a stellar finishing split, recording the country’s second fastest time in the process. By the halfway point, Yep had built a lead of 26-hundreths over the field, and he maintained the lead over the next two lengths, but Matheny came home on top to secure the win.
On the strength of a 28.35 homecoming split, Matheny touched in 1:49.83, a tenth of Yep’s 1:49.93. Those times rank second and third, respectively, in the country this season, with only Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti having previously gone below 1:50. Those two were followed by Toby Barnett, who achieved his second significant time drop in a day to touch third in 1:51.73, while Caspar Corbeau came in fourth (1:52.22).

200 Butterfly
While Indiana will win the meet, Michigan has put itself in a solid second place in the standings. The Wolverines’ top swim of the final day came from Colin Geer, who knocked almost two seconds off his season-best in the 200 fly to secure the win. Geer had the lead the entire way, but it wasn’t until the final 50 yards that he broke way from Minnesota’s Jacob Johnson. Geer came in at 1:39.58, good for No. 7 in the nation, and he was just off the 2021 meet record of 1:39.22 held by Brendan Burns.
Johnson placed second in 1:40.47, narrowly holding off a 25.88 closing split from Geer’s Michigan teammate Tyler Ray. After winning the 100 fly Friday, Ray came in at 1:40.55 here. Indiana’s Tomer Frankel took fourth (1:40.94) while the top seed after prelims, USC’s Krzysztof Chmielewski, fell to sixth (1:41.44) as he attempted a grueling double, racing the 200 fly final following the 1650 free.

Platform Diving
Purdue secured the top spot in platform diving, but in-state rival Indiana got the points needed in its title pursuit. Jordan Rzepka scored 464.05 points to dominate the event, with freshman teammate Tyler Wells taking third (430.50). However, Indiana’s Carson Tyler grabbed second (430.85), with teammates Quinn Henninger fourth (414.05) and Maxwell Weinrich fifth (403.05).

400 Freestyle Relay
Indiana wrapped up its championship effort by taking one-and-a-half seconds off the meet record in the 400 free relay. The meet’s individual star, Owen McDonald, handled the leadoff leg before Mikkel Lee and Dylan Smiley led into Matt King, who pulled away from runnerup Ohio State with his 40.69 anchor split. That allowed Indiana to finish in 2:45.62, the sixth-fastest time in the country and good enough for a spot in the top heat of the event at the NCAA Championships.
Finishing more than one-and-a-half seconds back was Ohio State, with the team of Tomas Navikonis, Daniel Baltes, Mario McDonald and Cornelius Jahn touching in 2:47.47. Michigan’s Gal Groumi, Bence Szabados, Colin Geer and Jack Wilkening ended up third in 2:48.91.
