Big Ten Men’s Championships, Day 3: Finn Brooks Enters Sub-50 Club as Indiana Demolishes 100 Breaststroke
The Indiana University Hoosiers have perhaps the top men’s breaststroke contingent ever assembled in college swimming, with four returning all-Americans. Caspar Corbeau joined the team this spring after wining Olympic bronze in the 200-meter breaststroke while returnee Josh Matheny also swam in the Paris final of that event. Brian Benzing transferred in after placing second in the 100-yard breast at last season’s NCAA Championships while Jassen Yep had NCAA finishes of seventh and 14th last season.
But in a surprising result, none of them emerged as the Big Ten champion in the 100 breast. Instead, that honor went to Finn Brooks, a Hoosiers senior who dropped his best time by more than a second Friday while becoming the fifth man ever to join the sub-50 club in the event. In prelims, he clocked 50.42 to smash his previous best time of 51.13 set in December. At night, Brooks blasted out to an early lead with a 23.08 opening split and never gave back ground.
Brooks touched in 49.94, making him the fifth-fastest performer ever in the event. Those who have been faster include Julian Smith, Liam Bell, Ian Finnerty and Max McHugh. Smith is the only member of that group still in college swimming, having posted the fastest time ever of 49.51 at last week’s SEC Championships, while Finnerty is a former Hoosiers swimmer who was the inaugural member of that club in 2018. This latest result by Brooks took down the Big Ten meet record of 50.19 set by McHugh in 2021.
Behind Brooks, the accomplished group of veteran breaststrokers put up a huge point total for Indiana. Benzing took second in 50.73, followed by Matheny (50.94), Corbeau (50.97) and Yep (51.10). While Brooks sits second in the national rankings behind Smith, Benzing now ranks fourth, followed by Matheny in seventh, Corbeau eighth and Yep 11th.
Indiana continues to build a significant lead in the team competition, having amassed 1067 points. Michigan is second with 784.5, followed by Ohio State (731), USC (588) and Minnesota (512.5).

100 Butterfly
Michigan’s Tyler Ray had already finished second in the 50 free, and he took home a conference title in the 100 fly as he got to the wall in 44.28, two hundredths under the meet record of 44.30 he set in prelims. Ray came home in 11.63 to move ahead of Indiana’s Finn Brooks to secure the win. The Wolverines junior now ranks No. 8 in the country, between Florida’s Scotty Buff and Texas A&M’s Connor Foote.
Brooks competed in the 100 fly final shortly before his historic performance in the 100 breast, and he built a lead of four tenths at the 75-yard mark before he faded down the stretch. Still, he managed a time of 44.59, good for No. 13 in the national rankings. Indiana went 2-3 here as Tomer Frankel touched in 44.74, with Michigan also getting a second top point-scorer as Colin Geer grabbed fourth (45.10) to accompany Ray’s win.

400 IM
Ohio State’s Tristan Jankovics now owns the top time this championship season in the men’s 400 IM after he dominated the Big Ten final of the event. After trailing USC’s Krzysztof Chmielewski after the butterfly leg, he moved ahead on backstroke before opening up a four-second advantage on breaststroke and holding serve on freestyle.
The Buckeyes junior ended up coming into the wall in 3:35.51, crushing a 16-year-old meet record of 3:38.03 set by Michigan’s Tyler Clary during the supersuit era of 2009. Jankovics, eighth in the 400 IM at last season’s NCAA Championships, swam the second-fastest time in the country behind the 3:34.19 posted by Texas’ Rex Maurer in November, and he swam a tick quicker than the 3:35.61 Maurer swam at last week’s SEC Championships. In the process, Jankovics became the No. 9 performer in history in the event.
Michigan freshman Lorne Wigginton also cracked the 3:40-barrier, coming in second at 3:39.76, while Chmielewski placed third in 3:40.57, rebounding from a rough breaststroke leg to beat out Wisconsin’s Dominik Mark Torok (3:40.59).

200 Freestyle
The Ohio State Buckeyes topped the podium for the second consecutive event, and another Big Ten meet record went down as Tomas Navikonis led wire-to-wire and did not allow Michigan’s Gal Groumi or Indiana’s Rafael Miroslaw to close the gap. Navikonis was out in 44.14 and back in 46.87 on the way to a time of 1:31.01.
That mark was good for the No. 6 spot in the nation behind Tennessee sprint star Jordan Crooks and the top-five finishers from last week’s SEC Championships. Navikonis took down the meet record of 1:31.14 set by Blake Pieroni in 2018. Four weeks after Pieroni set that meet mark, he would become the first man ever under 1:30 while swimming in the same University of Minnesota pool.
Groumi placed second in 1:31.57, followed by Miroslaw in 1:32.03. Michigan went 2-4 here with Eitan Ben-Shitrit taking fourth (1:32.63).

100 Backstroke
Immediately after Indiana’s incredible 1-2-3-4-5 sweep in the 100 breaststroke, the Hoosiers took the top-two spots in the 100 back as well, with Owen McDonald leading the way. The junior, who transferred from Arizona State in the offseason, had already clocked a sub-1:40 performance in the 200 IM in Minneapolis, and here he came in at 44.38 to become the country’s third-quickest swimmer in the 100 back. He ranks behind Florida’s Jonny Marshall and the Texas duo of Will Modglin and Hubert Kos.
Indiana got another top finish here as freshman Miroslav Knedla posted a mark of 45.02 to edge out Northwestern’s Stuart Seymour (45.07) by three hundredths. Yet another Hoosier impressed as Luke Barr was just behind in fourth (45.10).

Indiana continued to wrack up points on the boards, with Quinn Henninger, Carson Tyler and Maxwell Weinrich all qualifying for the conference A-final, but none of the trio placed in the top-three. Instead, it was USC’s Moritz Wesemann building on his second-place finish in 1-meter by scoring 426.75 points here. 400 Medley Relay
Indiana blasted the field in the 400 medley relay, extending their lead in the standings to 287.5 points heading into the final day. The Hoosiers had the fastest split in each stroke on the way to a time of 2:59.87, more than a second under the team’s previous meet record of 3:00.95 set in 2022.
Owen McDonald, already the winner of the 200 IM and 100 back in Minneapolis, clocked 44.74 on the leadoff leg before Finn Brooks followed up his sub-50 performance in the individual 100 breast with a 49.74 leg here. Tomer Frankel, the only swimmer returning from the 2022 meet-record team, clocked 44.75 on fly, just ahead of identical 44.76 splits from Michigan’s Tyler Ray and Minnesota’s Jacob Johnson, before Matt King came home in 40.64.
The Indiana men swam more than four seconds slower than Florida did in setting the NCAA and U.S. Open records in the 400 medley relay, but they still became only the third team to crack the 3:00-barrier this season, joining the Gators and Tennessee.
Michigan’s Jack Wilkening, Owen Kalafat, Ray and Gal Groumi placed second in 3:02.77, with Minnesota’s Casey Stowe, Joseph Rudd, Johnson and Kaiser Neverman placing third in 3:04.55.
