Big 12 Championships, Night 5: Jonny Kulow Meet Record Caps Arizona State Sweep
There was little left in the final night of the Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday night for Arizona State short of a coronation procession.
Over the first four days at the King County Aquatics Center, the Sun Devils had assembled massive leads in both the men’s and women’s team competition. Saturday had long been a formality for ASU, finishing up a dominant performance in Year 1 of life in the Big 12.
Jonny Kulow set a meet record in the men’s 100 freestyle, then helped the Sun Devils finish off the meet with dual sweeps in the 400 free relays. The winning margin for the women’s team ended up at 455 points, while the men’s team put a scare into the 2,000-point barrier, though even the 64 lost from Friday’s disqualified 200 free relay wouldn’t quite have gotten them there. The 1,912 was 600 more than Arizona, the runner-up in both. On the men’s side, the three conference newcomers, with Utah in third, took the top three spots.
Arizona State swept the Swimmer of the Year awards, with Jonny Kulow as the top male, Lucien Vergnes as the top male freshman, Caroline Bentz as the top female and Julia Ullmann the top female freshman.
Anna Kwong of TCU was named the top female diver, and her male teammate David Ekdahl took home the other honor. Colin Agor of Arizona and Callie Eagleston of Utah were named the top freshmen divers.

A non-Arizona State win? A non-Arizona State win!
For the first time in a non-disqualified swimming event, a non-Sun Devil was atop the podium. Hunter Gubeno of Cincinnati, the runner-up at this event last year, bumped up a place to gold in 1:40.38. He outraced Arizona’s Will Meyers, who shaved a half-second in finals to 1:40.81. Danny Berlitz of West Virginia was third.
As for Arizona State, Jono Adam led the way in sixth. Jack Wadsworth, the 100 back winner, tied for seventh, and 400 IM champ Michael Hochwalt won the B final.

Sans Bentz, chaos reigned. And five swimmers within .44 seconds fit the bill.
When the wash settled, it was the swimmer who was fourth at the midpoint who came out on top, Arizona’s Julia Wozniak, who went 48.56. She had been quickest in prelims. Teammate Riley Botton, the standout of last night’s 200 free relay win, was second. Those points turned a 60-point deficit into a 50-point lead over Houston in the battle for second.
Arizona State took the next two spots, with Julia Ullmann third in 48.82 and Erin Milligan fourth in 48.94. Jessica Davis of Cincinnati was the first swimmer from outside the Grand Canyon State, in fifth in 49.00.

Normal service is restored in the 100 free, for Arizona State and the state of Arizona at large.
All eight finalists and the entire top 10 hailed from Arizona schools, led by Jonny Kulow’s 41.07. He downed the meet record set in 2020 by Daniel Krueger of Texas in 2020 (41.26) with a 41.22 in prelims, then lowered it further in finals, nearly clipping Tate Jackson’s conference record of 41.06 from 2018.
Patrick Sammon followed for ASU in 41.39. Tommy Palmer was fourth in 42.00, with Filip Senc-Samardzic sixth and Quin Seider seventh.
Arizona filled the gaps. Tomas Lukminas went 41.97 for third. Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri continued a strong week in 42.30 for fifth, with Hunter Ingram eighth.

Women’s platform diving
A tinge of controversy on platform, with TCU’s Anna Kwong dropping late with a mixup on her dive program, resulting in a low score that dropped the 3-meter champ to eighth. That allowed Arizona State’s Kayden Hayes to win in 251.60. Houston’s Michelle McLeod scored significant points in second in 247.60, with Utah’s Callie Eagleston third.
Hayes had been 14th on 3-meter and 21st on 1-meter. Eagleston has two third-place finishes and a fourth at Big 12s.
Kwong, Eagleston and 1-meter champion Shiyun Lai of Kansas were among four divers to make all three finals. Lai finished fifth. Zara Ayazi of Arizona was the fourth; she finished seventh.

Men’s 400 freestyle relay
Friday’s relay disappointment was largely dispelled by a dominant performance by Arizona State, with a meet and conference record of 2:44.03. They dashed the meet record by more than four seconds, with Texas’s 2018 mark of 2:48.35 obliterated. The conference mark had been the 2019 time of Texas from NCAAs at 2:45.12.
Ilya Kharun split 41.72 off the front, with Patrick Sammon in 40.34 and Jonny Kulow 40.48 on the end. Third leg Tommy Palmer was 41.49, and the starts were safe this tsime around.
Arizona was second, though not improving their A cut in 2:49.41, having been 2:48.65 in season. BYU was third.
