Aussie Olympic Champion Cam McEvoy Leads ‘Next Gen’ Men Into Sydney Open and Unisport Nationals

Olympic 50m freestyle champion Cam McEvoy will spearhead a “next gen” group of Aussie sprinters into this weekend’s 2025 Sydney Open and Unisport Nationals Meet at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
The 30-year-old father-to-be will line-up in his pet event the 50m freestyle and one of the latest additions to the LA28 program – the 50m butterfly.
McEvoy has already heralded his intentions – that he is not slowing down as he prepares for his final hit out before next month’s Singapore World Championship Trials in Adelaide (June 9-14).
Despite a limited training program leading into the Australian racing season.
The four-time Olympian winning both events at last month’s Australian Open – the 50m freestyle in 21.46 – the third fastest time in the world this year – and the 50m butterfly in 23.09, ranking him eighth.
McEvoy (Somerville House, QLD; Coach Tim Lane) is hoping that his “second coming” will drag Australia’s next generation of sprinters along for the ride.
Also lining up at the three-day Sydney Open Meet (May 16-18) will be fellow Paris Olympic 50m freestyler Ben Armbruster (Bond, QLD; Coach Chris Mooney), who was 14th in Paris in 21.97.
McEvoy and Armbruster will be joined in the 50m freestyle by fellow Paris Olympians Will Yang (Sydney University, NSW; coach Adam Kable) and Flynn Southam (Bond, QLD; coach Chris Mooney) along with Grayson Bell (Somerville House, QLD; Coach Tim Lane) and Australian Age find Ollie Moclair (Cranbrook, NSW; coach Bec Wheatley).
McEvoy and Armbruster will line up in the 50m butterfly heats with fellow Australian Open finalists 17-year-old Thomas Pattison (Somerville House, QLD; Coach Tim Lane); Jesse Coleman (Bond, QLD; coach Chris Mooney); Alex Quach (SOPAC, NSW; Coach Adam Kable) and Joseph Hamson (Macquarie University, NSW).
Next Gen sprinter Ollie Moclair from Cranbrook is coached by Tom Sunter
