Arizona 5A Division I High School State Championships

MESA, Arizona, November 9. XAVIER Prep and Brophy Prep walked away with state titles at the Arizona 5A Division I High School State Championships. The Xavier Prep girls tallied 546 points for first, followed by Desert Vista (323) and Mt. View-Mesa (303). On the boys’ side, Brophy Prep won with 545 points while Desert Vista took second (256) and Mt. View-Mesa placed third (240).
Girls Individual Results
Mt. View-Mesa opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Aubree Allen, Breeia Larson, Kat Simonovic, and Emily Christiansen clocked a first-place finishing time of 1:45.24. Simonovic and Christiansen also had individual wins in the 200 (1:49.70) and 500 (4:58.61) freestyles, respectively.
Junior Katie Olsen (Desert Vista) was a dual event winner in the 50 freestyle (23.45) and the 100 breaststroke. In the 100 breaststroke, she surpassed the state record set by Caitlin Leverenz (Sahuaro) in 2006 with a time of 1:00.68. Olsen was only .02 seconds off the independent national record set by Spindrift Beck (Hockaday, TX) in 2007.
Sarah Graif, Alisha Bender, Elizabeth Keenan, and Kayra Zsiga of Xavier Prep combined for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.14).
Xavier Prep’s Megan Harper won the diving competition with a score of 413.90. Briyelle Nasby (Basha) took second (335.60) and Nikki Vetter (Xavier Prep) placed third (334.10).
Talie Anchustegui (Xavier Prep) won the 100 butterfly (55.36) and the 100 backstroke (56.60).
Senior Haley Krakoski, who is a five-star recruit in the Swimming World College Recruit rankings powered by Take Your Marks, won the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.47. She teamed up with Anchustegui, Bender, and Kennan for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:28.82).
Boys Individual Results
Brophy Prep won all three relays. Louis Wojciechowski, Harrison Gibson, John Wojciechowski, and Brian Stevens set a state record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.33. L. Wojciechowski also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.86.
Stevens, a junior, won the 200 (1:39.11) and 100 (45.76) freestyles while J. Wojciechowski, a senior, won the 50 freestyle (20.83) and the 100 butterfly (48.07). J. Wojciechowski is a five-star recruit in the Swimming World College Recruit rankings powered by Take Your Marks.
Jeremy Becker, Gabriel Espinosa, Carter Smith, and Tony Mead-Smith (Brophy Prep) won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.34.
Top finishers in the diving competition include Mt. View-Mesa’s Issac Thruston (453.45), Desert Vista’s Connor Dignan (428.60), and Red Mountain’s Ryan Engel (393.40).
Sophomore Chris Webb (Brophy Prep) won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:34.88. He teamed up with J. Wojciechowski, Becker, and Stevens for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:07.01).
