Andrei Minakov Drops 22.77 50 Free on Final Night in Santa Clarita

Plenty of fast times were posted on the fourth and final day of competition at the 2018 Speedo Sectional Series in Santa Clarita, Calif., including 16-year-old Andrei Minakov’s quick 50 free. The meet was hosted by Canyons Aquatic Club and was held at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.

Women’s 800 Free

Cathryn Salladin of Fast Swim Team completed her distance sweep after winning the women’s 800 free. Salladin, who is headed to Alabama this fall, swam a lifetime best of 8:54.72 to win her third title as the only swimmer under the nine-minute mark.

La Mirada Armada’s Levona Harper swam her way to second place in 9:09.07 while Fast Swim Team’s Nicole Salladin had a best time of 9:10.56 for third.

Men’s 1500 Free

Gordon Mason of Team Santa Monica also dominated the distance events this weekend, winning the men’s 1500 free in addition to the 400 and 800. He finished 12 seconds ahead of the field in a five-second best time of 15:50.22.

De Anza Cupertino Aquatics’ Daniel Marella finished second in 16:22.11 while La Mirada Armada’s Michael Lee took third in 16:27.17.

Women’s 200 IM

Brea Aquatics’ Jacqueline Bashamwho finished third in the women’s 100 breast yesterday, found herself on top of the podium in the 200 IM tonight. She posted a lifetime best by three seconds, getting her hand to the wall first in 2:20.68.

Her teammate Zephanie Koh delivered the runner-up finish in 2:22.03 and Jayssielisa Haynes of Roadrunner Aquatics picked up a close third in 2:22.25.

Men’s 200 IM

Roadrunner Aquatics’ Brock Bonetti added the men’s 200 IM title in addition to his 100 back win from earlier this meet. He finished over one second ahead of a competitive field, stopping the clock in a final time of 2:04.64.

Brea Aquatics’ Michael Tenney knocked off two seconds from his seed time to take second in 2:05.99 and Tri Valley Aqautics’ Cole Reznick finished third in 2:08.68.

Women’s 50 Free

Brea Aquatics’ Marly Lough won a very close women’s 50 free final in a new personal best time. The 15-year-old sprinted her way to the top in 26.55, out-touching the runner-up by 0.01.

Second place went to Rancho San Dieguito’s Kira Crage in 26.56 while Mya Jackson was right behind them to take third in 26.57.

Men’s 50 Free

Sixteen-year-old Andrei Minakov of Terrapins won the men’s splash-and-dash in a sizzling 22.77 as the only swimmer under the 23-second barrier. This marks his third individual win of the weekend and is a new personal best.

Stanford’s Cole Cogswell sprinted his way to second in 23.32 and Terrapins’ Maxwell Bottene took third in 23.50.

Women’s 4×100 Medley Relay

The Brea Aquatics quartet of Emily Trieu (1:05.29), Basham (1:12.08), Koh (1:01.86) and Lough (58.59) combined to win the women’s 4×100 medley relay in 4:17.82.

Beach Cities Swimming took second in 4:20.19 with Terrapins Swim Team finishing third in 4:21.75.

Men’s 4×100 Medley Relay

Terrapins’ Bottene (58.72), Michael Dulay (1:05.35), Minakov (52.01) and Alexei Sancov (50.45) dominated the meet’s final event, winning by five seconds in a time of 3:46.53.

Roadrunner Aquatics took second in 3:51.13 while Brea Aquatics rounded out the podium in 3:51.20 for third.
