Alexander Kunert Shines At 2015 International Swim Cup In Berlin
The 2015 International Swim Cup concluded this weekend in Berlin with an impressive performance from German Olympic-hopeful Alexander Kunert. The meet played host to over 700 athletes from Macedonia, Portugal, Sweden, Slovakia, Poland, and Germany, but none swam as well as Kunert. The young German was a part of his country’s 2014 Youth Olympics squad and European Juniors team. He also competed in the 2015 World Championships in Kazan.
German National Team head coach Hennig Lambertz said in his introductory letter at the meet that he sent “prospect team” swimmers like Kunert because the meet’s profile was growing with elite sponsorships from Arena and AMEO.
Kunert blew away the men’s 200-meter free with a 1:51.00, three seconds ahead of the closest finisher. He split 53.83 and 57.17 in a race that clearly wasn’t closely contested. In the men’s 100-meter fly, he notched a 53.25 to yet again blow away the competition. Later, he added another butterfly win in the 50-meter race with a 24.61. He chipped in a win in the 100-meter IM with a comfortable 57.20, splitting 26.05 and a 31.15.
On the women’s side, Doris Eichhorn was a multi-event winner as well. She claimed victories in the women’s 100-meter fly (1:02.35), 200-meter IM (2:18.40), 100-meter breast (1:12.49), 100-meter back (1:02.85), and the 100-meter back (1:00.86).
Jenny Lahl found her way into the top three of numerous events. Lahl posted a dominant in the women’s 200-meter back with a 2:12.58, finishing with a four-second cushion ahead of the closest finisher. She busted out a 56.39 in the women’s 100-meter freestyle in a narrow victory ahead of Josephine Tesch (56.64). Lahl finished second in the 50-meter back (28.81), 200-meter IM (2:18.97), 50-meter free (26.35), and 100-meter back (1:01.14).
