Age-Group Standout Millie Conner Posts Several Nation-Leading Times at South Carolina Champs
Back in December, 11-year-old Millie Conner was featured in Swimming World’s Special Sets, with her work at Team Greenville (S.C.) the focus of the article. Well, over the weekend, Conner produced a number of stellar performances at the South Carolina Short Course Age-Group Championships.
En route to earning high-point recognition at the meet, Conner posted eight personal-best times and recorded four times that are ranked No. 1 in the nation for the 11-year-old age group.
Conner’s No. 1 times arrived in the 50 freestyle (24.78), 50 butterfly (26.62), 100 backstroke (1:00.87) and 200 backstroke (2:11.47). Meanwhile, she delivered No. 3 national times in the 100 freestyle (55.37) and 100 butterfly (59.73) and managed the fourth-fastest swim in the 50 backstroke (28.36). She also turned in a top-10 effort in the 100 individual medley, where she clocked 1:03.67.
“Millie operates on a different wavelength than everyone else,” her coach, Lorin Collins, has said. “She understands the full picture of what we are asking whereas most kids are focused on one thing. She also has an awesome, intrinsic feel for the water and is more sensitive to details and little tweaks to strokes. Millie has a comprehension concerning physical feedback that many don’t develop until their mid-teen years.”
