ACC Championships, Night 3 Finals: Lucy Bell Starts Record Setting Night in 400 IM

Records fell with regularity on Thursday night at the ACC Championships, starting with Stanford’s Lucy Bell in the 400 IM.

Bell went 3:59.11, downing the three-year-old mark set by Ella Nelson of Virginia. It would be the first of two pool records and two meet records to go by the wayside for the session.

Anna Moesch set the pool record by becoming just the fourth woman to break 1:40 in the 200 freestyle in college competition, and Henry McFadden of Stanford downed Luke Miller’s meet mark in the 200 free from 2022.

Moesch helped Virginia stretch its lead to more than 100 points in the team category as the Cavaliers chase a seventh consecutive team title. On the men’s side, Cal and Stanford are neck-and-deck, with both Louisville and NC State dented by early disqualifications.

The action from the second night of the meet.

Women’s 400 individual medley

Lucy Bell’s swim was a harbinger of what would come after. The Stanford senior won the race in 3:59.11, clipping .22 seconds off the ACC Championships mark set at 3:59.33 by Ella Nelson in 2023.

Bell needed all that to get past Katie Grimes, the Virginia sophomore who went 3:59.80 to finish second. Bell was up six tenths at the 300-yard mark before Grimes trimmed about half of that deficit on the seventh 50. Bell had the strength coming home, though.

Virginia still built its lead, though. Aimee Canny was third in 4:02.35. Sophia Umstead rose from seventh in prelims to fourth, and Leah Hayes was fifth. Caroline Bricker, the top seed entering the meet, was just seventh for Stanford. That moves the Cavaliers’ lead to 73 points over the Cardinal.

Men’s 400 individual medley

After a massive PB in the morning, Josh Zuchowski went lower still at night, going 3:38.58. His best time had been a 3:42.22 entering the meet, but the Stanford senior summarily dashed that.

Ryan Erisman gave him a push, going 3:38.94 for second place for Cal. Louisville’s Tommy Bried was just seventh in the morning but leapt to third in 3:40.15, .06 ahead of teammate Gregg Enoch. That slightly cushioned the blow of a Jackson Millard DQ.

The fifth-fastest time at night came from Frederick Klein of California at 3:41.30, but it was in the B final.

In the showdown of Olympians, Torri Huske got the better of Claire Curzan. The Stanford senior went 48.26 to win, .19 up on Curzan. Both were under the pool record set at NCAAs in 2022 by Kate Douglass. Huske’s time was .01 off the meet mark that Gretchen Walsh set in 2024.

Huske won it on the first 50, going out in 22.20. Curzan’s 22.56 was great but not enough to track down Huske.

Stanford got big points with Gigi Johnson third in 49.95 on the front half of her quick double. Leah Shackley of NC State roared from seventh in prelims to fourth in 50.52, ahead of Virginia’s Sara Curtis in a still prosperous event for Virginia. Annie Jia finished sixth for Cal.

Julian Koch of Pitt was third in 44.56. Six swimmers got under 45 seconds, among them Arsenio Bustos of NC State in 44.82.

Women’s 200 freestyle

Virginia’s Anna Moesch joined hallowed company as just the fourth college woman to swim under 1:40 in the 200-yard free, going 1:39.72. That’s the pool record, trouncing the 1:41.12 of Stanford’s Taylor Ruck at NCAAs in 2022. She is just outside of the meet record of Gretchen Walsh (1:39.34) in 2025.

Virginia went 1-2-4-6. Madi Mintenko finished second in 1:41.52. Bailey Hartman was fourth, Cavan Gormsen sixth.

In between was Claire Weinstein, who jumped from fifth in prelims to third in 1:42.40. Carmen Weiler Sastre of Virginia Tech was fifth in 1:43.14. Stanford finished seventh and eighth, with Anna Olasewere and Gigi Johnson on the end of her double.

Men’s 200 freestyle

Henry McFadden took down the meet record in the men’s 100 free, and it required a charge to the wall.

The Stanford junior was well out front at 150, but he had just the fourth-fastest final 50. It was enough to get in at 1:31.05, trimming the 1:13.16 that Luke Miller of NC State set in 2022.

Second was Logan Robinson of Florida State, who closed in 22.92 to get second in 1:31.18. Kaii Winkler of NC State was third in 1:31.27. Three others got under 1:32, led by Cal’s Keaton Jones.
