A Pair of State Records Fall as Lincoln Southwest Girls, Creighton Prep Boys Secure Nebraska Team Titles

The 2019 Nebraska State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.
A pair of Nebraska state records fell at this meet:
- Creighton Prep’s Rush Clark – 100 fly (47.54)
- Grand Island’s Jonathan Novinski – 500 free (4:32.04)
Lincoln Southwest successfully defended their team title on the girls’ side with 362 points to secure their fifth trophy in six years. Creighton Prep won their 13th-consecutive boys’ title, and 21st championship crown in program history, with a final score of 310.5.

Marian’s Maddie Clark (26.61), JoJo Ranby (28.48), Isabella Pantano (25.24) and Amanda Allbery (25.13) opened the meet by winning the 4×50 medley relay in 1:45.46. Pantano then went on to earn a personal victory in the 100 back, powering home in 55.48 for the win while teammate Megan Carter won the 1-meter diving with a score of 464.70.
Lincoln Southwest’s Allie Hathaway cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:53.56 for the win. Norfolk’s Annika Harthoorn flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, getting her hands to the wall first in 56.77. Pius X’s Katie Stonehocker raced to first in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 1:02.95 for the win.
Lincoln Southwest’s Berkeley Livingston dominated the 200 IM, winning by four seconds with a final time of 2:02.63. She showed her versatility by also grabbing the gold medal in the 500 free, posting an eight-second victory with a time of 5:01.07.
Lincoln Southwest’s Anna Heinrich splashed-and-dashed her way to a win in the 50 free, touching the wall in 23.57 as the only swimmer under the 24-second mark. She showed her sprint talent by also earning gold in the 100 free, racing to the wall in 51.93.
Lincoln Southwest’s Marti Walstad (24.55), Reanna Reida (24.83), Isabella Morales (24.01) and Heinrich (23.39) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:36.78. Livingston (52.17), Walstad (52.70), Lanyon Mlinek (53.85) and Hathaway (52.72) concluded the meet by winning the 4×100 free relay in 3:31.44 for another Lincoln Southwest victory.

PLVS’ Mark Cavanaugh (23.04), Luke Barr (24.37), Daniel Keller (24.17) and Joe Ciriaco (21.29) began the boys’ meet by winning the 4×50 medley relay in 1:32.87. Barr (20.17), Keller (22.96), Ciriaco (21.54) and Cavanaugh (20.70) teamed up again to claim the 4×50 free relay in 1:25.37 for another PLVC victory.
Shortly after helping his medley relay team to victory, Barr was back in the water to claim a personal win in the 200 IM in 1:47.91 as the only swimmer in the field to break the 1:50 mark. He then went on to win the 100 breast, getting his hands to the wall first in 55.17.
Lincoln Southwest’s Tommy Palmer cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:40.59 for the win. Burke’s Kody Hollingsworth splashed-and-dashed his way to the wall in the 50 free, winning in a swift 21.26.
Millard South’s Zach Boyd dove to first on the 1-meter board, finishing with a final score of 501.20. Grand Island’s Jonathan Novinski dominated the 500 free, powering home in 4:35.20. His prelims time of 4:32.04 crushed William Schuermann’s Nebraska state record of 4:34.76 set back in 2009.
Creighton Prep’s Rush Clark flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly in record-setting fashion. His final time of 47.54 bettered the 47.64 he posted during prelims to break Jacob Molacek’s 2013 Nebraska state mark of 48.68. He then went on to sprint to first in the 100 free in a quick 45.39.
The 100 back state title went to Ross Pantano of Creighton Prep who won in 49.81 as the only swimmer in the race to sneak under the 50-second barrier. Creighton Prep’s Clark (46.28), Andrew Hood (47.59), Daniel Perry (47.86) and Pantano (45.93) concluded the meet by winning the 4×100 free relay by four seconds in 3:07.66.
