2022 Division III Championships: Kenyon’s Yurii Kosian Sets 200 Back Record
2022 Division III Championships: Kenyon’s Yurii Kosian Sets 200 Back Record
Kenyon’s Yurii Kosian notched an NCAA record Saturday morning at the 2022 Division III Championships, firing off a 1:43.43 in the men’s 200 backstroke. That downs a record that had held for seven years and capped a quick morning session.
It’s only a brief diversion, though, from what is shaping up as an epic title race on the women’s side. Entering the final day of four at the meet, just 4.5 points separate the top three. Kenyon leads with 311 points, but Emory (307) and Denison (306.5) are right on their heels. The women have a busy night, with 3-meter diving in the night session plus the 1,650 freestyles and the 400 free relays.
Keynon has five A finalists and three B finalists. Emory has four A finalists and five B finalists. Denison has 4 A finalists and one B finalist, though three for Denison are in the final heat 1,650 free. Emory’s 1,650 contingent will finish no worse than ninth and 10th, Kenyon’s 12th and 14th. Emory also has two divers, Denison one with none for Kenyon.
If it comes down to the 400 free relay, Denison is seeded second, with Emory third and Kenyon fourth.

Men’s 100 freestyle
A time of 44.2 didn’t make the A final. A 44.6 missed the B final in a deep sprinting field. Tobe Obochi took top honors in prelims, the MIT sophomore going 43.44. (Later in the session, he clocked a 43.33 to lead MIT to the top seed in the 400 free relay.) He was .21 up on 50 free champ Kevin Gillooly of Rowan. Nicholas Goudie of Emory finished third in 43.79, with Julian Iturbe also cracking 44 seconds.
Among the B finalists is 200 free champ Jamie Lovette.

Women’s 100 freestyle
Emory needs a big move in the 100 free. Taylor Leone is in position to help, going 50.16 in prelims to get the top seed. Teammate Caroline Maki is third. The top eight are separated by .61 seconds. Alex Turvey of Pomona-Pitzer, the top seed entering the meet and the only sub-50 time this season, was second din 50.32. Kenyon looms with Emmie Mirus fifth and Alexandra White seventh.

Men’s 200 backstroke
Yurii Kosian downed the only NCAA record of the morning session, going 1:43.43 in the 200 back. The record had belonged to Harrison Curley of Kenyon since 2015 at 1:43.49. That’s also six tenths quicker than the winning time from the 2019 championships.
Holding onto the top spot won’t be easy. Whitman’s Tanner Filion finished second in 1:43.60. Jack Wadsworth of Ithaca is second in 1:44.07. There’s precedent this week for a prelims record set by a non-winner in the event, with Kosian’s teammate David Fitch having that fate befall him in the 100 fly.

Women’s 200 backstroke
A three-swimmer race in the final appears to be in the offing. Third in that reckoning from prelims is reigning champ Crile Hart of Kenyon, who went 1:58.86.
The also the only non-freshman among the top five. Williams rookie Sophia Verkleeren set the pace in 1:58.52. Kate Augustyn of MIT was second in 1:58.84. Hart is one of three swimmers with 1:57s to their names this season, with Bates’ Sophie Cassily and Megan Jungers of Emory. They qualified fifth and sixth, respectively.

Women’s 200 breaststroke
St. Kate’s Jordyn Wentzel secured the top seed in 2:12.37, a second ahead of the field. No shock there, since she entered with the fastest seed time by more than two seconds over the field, a time that is the NCAA record. She was just a tenth off of the winning time in 2019 in the morning.
The field will be chasing her. Second was Amanda Wager of Williams in 2:13.61. Kenyon’s Jennah Fadely finished third in 2:14.63.
