2019 Canadian Swimming Trials Prelims Day 5: 200 IM Battles Set for Final Night of Competition
The final morning of the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto featured the Para 150 and 200 IMs as well as the Para 50 Freestyle. Other races include the 200 IM and 50, 800 and 1500 Freestyles. This is the qualifying meet for all upcoming major international meets for the Canadian team, including the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.
Sydney Pickrem will look to claim another World Championships swim and Canadian title in the 200 IM after taking the race’s top seed. Cole Pratt will face a strong field including Mack Darragh in the 200 IM. Taylor Ruck and Penny Oleksiak did not swim in the 50 Freestyle— Sarah Fournier and Yuri Kisil took the top seeds in this event.
Women’s Para 150 IM
Aly Van Wyck-Smart continued her positive momentum by taking the top seed in the 150 IM in 5:13.48 and 848 points. Nikita Ens will also compete in the finals after dropping twenty-four seconds from her seed time and coming in at 4:41.89.

Women’s Para 200 IM
Samantha Ryan took the top seed in the 200 distance, touching the wall in 2:44.00, right on her best time. Katarina Roxon took the second seed in 2:49.09. Camille Bérubé will race in another final after taking the third seed in 3:13.33. After claiming the top seed in yesterday’s 200 Free prelims, Angela Marina claimed the fourth spot in 2:44.49.
Also competing in tonight’s final are Ari Hunsicker (2:53.77), Sabrina Duchesne (3:23.16), Tess Routliffe (3:25.04), Danielle Dorris (3:10.08), Justina Morrier (2:48.72) and Emma Van Dyk (2:48.88).

Men’s Para 200 IM
All ten competitors in the men’s event will get another chance to swim in the finals of the 200 IM. Nicholas Bennett secured another top seed with his best time of 2:19.40. Alex Elliot was second in 2:19.11 and was followed by Nicolas Turbide (2:21.35). Zach Zona raced to a best time of 2:42.22 for the fourth seed.
Philip Vachon (2:39.72), Felix Cowan (2:48.39), Nic Plamondon (2:48.90), Aidan Elliot (2:44.81), Caleb Arndt (2:41.83) and Tristan Pruneau-Tourny (3:25.82) will also race in the final.

Women’s 200 IM
Sydney Pickrem cruised to the 200 IM top seed in a FINA ‘A’ Standard of 2:12.01. Her strong back and free legs separated her from the field. The swim eleventh worldwide, but you can expect more from her in tonight’s final. Bailey Andison will look to punch her World Championships ticket after taking the second seed in 2:13.57. The swim was four seconds ahead of her seed time is just half a second off the FINA ‘A’ cut. She will be challenged by Kelsey Wog (2:14.19) and Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson (2:14.26) who both entered the meet with 2:11s.
Tess Cieplucha (2:14.75), Kayla Sanchez (2:15.35), Hillary Metcalfe (2:16.21), Mary-Sophie Harvey (2:16.50), Asia Minnes (2:17.59) and Avery Wiseman (2:18.03) will also race in the championship final.

Men’s 200 IM
Cole Pratt (2:02.11) raced to a best time in the 200 IM preliminaries, as did Robert Hill (2:02.21) and Finlay Knox (2:02.44). The men will provide a great race to watch in the finals with their varying strengths. Pratt out-split the competition on the backstroke leg (30.18), while Hill did so in the breast (34.83) and Knox did on the free (29.07).
Josh Zakala (2:03.48), Javier Acevedo (2:03.81) and Montana Champagne (2:03.99) were all slightly off their best time but will get another chance in tonight’s final. Mack Darragh cruised in at 2:04.51 for the seventh seed and was followed by Brian Palaschuk (2:04.63), William Marois (2:04.72) and James Dergousoff (2:04.76).

Women’s 50 Freestyle
Neither Penny Oleksiak nor Taylor Ruck competed in the 50 Freestyle preliminaries. Sarah Fournier took the top seed in 25.49. Kayla Sanchez was back in the pool to qualify for another final in 25.66. Alyson Ackman (25.78), Hanna Henderson (25.81) and Maggie MacNeil (25.84) all raced to personal bests for the third, fourth and fifth seeds.
Rounding out the top ten were Kyla Leibel (25.85), Louisse Hansson (25.92), Roxane Lemieux (25.97), Jade Hannah (26.05) and Ariane Mainville (26.09).
Men’s 50 Freestyle
Yuri Kisil maintained his top spot with a 22.46. He finished just ahead of Niko Miljenic (22.59) who will race in tonight’s ‘B’ final. William Pisani took the second seed in 22.61 and was followed closely by Oleksandr Loginov (22.64), Joshua Liendo (22.84) and Mehdi Ayoubi (22.88).
James LeBuke also dipped under 23 seconds in 22.99 four the sixth seed. He will be joined by Cameron Kidd (23.14), Spencer Bougie (23.16), Kyle Troskot (23.17) and Antoine Bernard-Lalonde (23.20) in the final.

Women’s Para 50 Freestyle
Aurélie Rivard swam a 28.84 for the top seed in the 50 Freestyle. Morgan Bird (32.03), Ari Hunsicker (30.91) and Abi Tripp (33.93) were also among the top finishers. Samantha Ryan (31.28), Myria Soliman (39.32), Tatiana Nault (39.55), Megan Sherwin (40.09), Colleen Cloetta (42.35) and Jessica Tinney (48.83) will race again in the final.

Matt Cabraja raced to a best time of 27.83 for the top seed in the 50 Freestyle. Alex Elliot swam a quick 25.86 to out-race Nic Turbide who finished in 25.93. Philip Vachon took the fourth seed in 29.16 and was followed by Nic Plamondon (30.21) and Felix Cowan (30.42) in the rankings. Caleb Arndt (28.76), Aidan Elliot (30.34) and Aleksandr Cakalj (57.57) rounded out the competitors.
