Nicholas Santos kept the fast racing going, blasting a 22.77 butterfly for the title. The swim ranks second in the world this year, only behind Russia’s Oleg Kostin (22.74). They both dropped ‘A’ cuts and surged into the top fifteen of the world rankings.
National-record-holder Etiene Medeiros cranked out a 50 backstroke in similar fashion to Santos. She posted a 27.36, good enough for the fastest time in the world this year. Her Brazilian record stands at 27.14 from 2017’s World Championships. Andrea Berrino was second (28.59) and Erika Goncalves was third (28.77).
Guilherme Guido stole the men’s race in 24.94 – the sixth-best performance of 2019 so far. Gabriel Fantoni, whose 24.90 from the preliminaries ranks fifth, ultimately took third in 25.12. Guilherme Basseto split the men in 24.99, putting him tenth in the world. All three men were ahead of the FINA’s standard.
