Charlotte Hook Breaks NAG Record, Walsh Sisters Rattle NAG Records on Final Day of Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East
The final night of the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships closed out in style with a new National Age Group record fall to 14-year-old Charlotte Hook in the 200 fly. Women’s 200 Breast
Much like her sister in the 100 free, 17-year-old Alex Walsh narrowly missed the NAG record in the 200 breast. Walsh swam a 2:06.02 on Saturday night at the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships in Greensboro in the 200 breast final, placing her second all-time in the 17-18 age group. Walsh missed the NAG record by 0.03 seconds that was held by Annie Zhu from 2016.
Walsh took over a second and a half off the meet record, which was broken last year by current Stanford freshman Zoe Bartel. The old record was a 2:07.44.
The time is a new best time for Walsh, as she won her third race of the weekend after already winning the 200 IM and 100 back.
She won ahead of 16-year-old Abby Arens (2:08.46), who moved up to fourth all-time in the 15-16 age group. She sits behind Walsh, Bartel and Caitlin Leverenz on the all-time list.
Walsh’s Nashville teammate Ella Nelson finished in third place at 2:09.30, as she lowered her best time by a half second. Arens’s Marlins teammate Ashley McCauley finished in fourth at 2:11.85.
Brooke Zettel (2:14.23), Grace Rainey (2:14.75), Sarah Bender (2:15.04) and Claire Donan (2:15.56) also swam in the A-final.

Matheny won ahead of Jake Foster, who finished second for the fourth time this weekend. Foster swam a 1:56.01, which was slightly slower than his 1:55.40 from last year’s Juniors East meet.
Paul Degrado finished in third at 1:57.55, while Asphalt Green’s Dylan Rhee finished in fourth at 1:58.15, dropping over a second from his prelim swim.

Women’s 200 Fly
14-year-old Charlotte Hook blasted the 13-14 NAG record in the 200 fly on the final night of the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships. Earlier in the night, Alex and Gretchen Walsh narrowly missed breaking NAG records of their own in the 200 breast and 100 free respectively. Hook finally broke a NAG record on Saturday night in Greensboro after two misses earlier in the night.
Hook dropped almost a full second off her best time in the 200 fly as she swam a 1:55.67, lowering the record from a 1:56.01 that was held by Cassidy Bayer from 2013. Coming into the day, Hook’s best was a 1:56.62 from March 2018, and she was 6th all-time in the event. She swims at the same club team as Claire Curzan, who won the 100 fly and 200 back this weekend.
Hook passed some legendary names on the all-time list that include 1984 Olympic Champion Mary T. Meagher and current USA National team member Regan Smith. She also passed Dynamo Swim Club’s Tristen Ulett, who was seventh in the race tonight.
Hook won the final holding off a late charge from 15-year-old Grace Sheble (1:56.25) and South Florida’s Mary Smutny (1:56.69). Sheble’s time is not a best time as the 400 IM champ was a 1:55.82 in March this year.
Megan Deuel (1:57.96), Kelly Pash (1:58.27), Gabi Albiero (1:58.30) and Rachel Klinker (1:59.85) also swam in the A-Final.

Swum earlier in the day because of an impending snow storm, the 400 free relays were swum after the preliminary session this morning. Nashville Aquatic Club won the women’s relay in a minor upset over Chelsea Piers, who had three swimmers in the 100 free A-Final. But the Walsh sisters book-ended the relay with Alex (48.97) leading off and Gretchen (47.95) anchoring. Nashville won their fourth relay of the meet. Chelsea Piers won the only relay that Nashville did not win, the 200 free relay last night.
Chelsea Piers (3:20.59) finished third behind SwimMAC Carolina (3:19.56).
