2018 Canadian Pan Pac Trials: Sydney Pickrem Earns Ticket to Pan Pac Championships
The Canadian Pan Pac Trials continue on Friday with day there finals in Edmonton, Alberta. The Canadian Pan Pac Trials are serving as a selection meet for the team that Canada will send to the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo later this summer.
Sydney Pickrem, Mackenzie Paddington, and Jeremy Bagshaw were among the top winners from tonight’s session.
Selection
The selection criteria for the Canadian Pan Pac team are as follows:
- Priority 1: The winner of each individual event will be selected.
- Priority 2: The top four finishers in 100 and 200 freestyle will be selected.
- Priority 3: Assuming they make the FINA A time standard, second place finishers will be selected in order of their world ranking.
- Priority 4: Third place finishers will be added in the same fashion if the team has not yet reached 32 swimmers and there are still qualifiers.
- Priority 5: Swimming Canada’s high performance director John Atkinson may select additional swimmers at his discretion.

Tammy Cunnington claimed victory in the women’s 150 IM para multi-class event, finishing with a time of 3:40.07. She improved upon her preliminary time of 3:41.98 by close to two seconds.

Aurelie Rivard dominated the competition in the women’s 200 IM para multi-class event. She topped the competition with a time of 2:35.37, scraping 6.34 seconds off her prelims time of 2:41.71.
Tess Routliffe finished second overall with a time of 3:06.53, while Katarina Roxon delivered a third place finish of 2:48.14.

Mackenzie Padington claimed the crown in the women’s 400 free, delivering a top finish of 4:11.56. She was followed to the wall by Kennedy Goss, who stopped the clock with a time of 4:12.66.
Emma O’Croinin rounded out the top three finishers with a time of 4:15.31.

Veteran freestyler Jeremy Bagshaw powered to a first place finish in the men’s 400 free, stopping the clock at a time of 3:54.15. Bagshaw, who has represented Canada internationally since his 2010 appearance at the Youth Olympic Games, holds the fastest time among Canada’s rankings for the 400 free this year at a 3:49.52 from the Commonwealth Games.
Peter Brothers posted the second fastest time of the evening at a 3:55.79, while Nathan Beaudin-Bolduc turned in a third place finish of 3:56.53.

2016 Olympian Penny Oleksiak and Maggie MacNeil battled for first in the women’s 100 fly. Oleksiak led the race from start-to-finish, turning first at the 50-meter mark with a 27.32 split, before finishing with a 58.37. MacNeil, who held the top seed going into finals, finished second overall with a time of 58.44.
Danielle Hanus rounded out the top three finishers with a time of 59.54.

Josiah Binnema moved up from his third place seed to top the finals heat with a 52.56.
Will Pisani led the field throughout the first 50-meters, turning first with a time of 24.42, but slipped to second with a final time of 53.17.

Women’s 200 IM
Sydney Pickrem collected her ticket to the Pan Pacific Championships with a strong win in the women’s 200 IM. Pickrem led throughout much of the race, clocking a 2:10.66 to win. Pickrem currently holds the fourth fastest time in the world for 2018 at a 2:09.92.
Second place was won by Kelsey Wog, who turned in a time of 2:11.14, followed by Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson and her time of 2:12.60.

Javier Acevedo earned his ticket to Pan Pacs in the men’s 200 IM, clocking a top time of 2:01.36. Acevedo led throughout the entirety of the race, building upon his lead with each leg of the race.
Robert Hill took second overall with a time of 2:03.03, just ahead of Montana Champagne’s third place finish of 2:03.09.
