2017 Men’s ACC Championships Day 3 Finals: Ryan Held, Grigory Tarasevich, Louisville Relay Set ACC Records
The third night of finals at the 2017 men’s ACC championships in Atlanta featured a trio of conference records broken as NC State’s Ryan Held won his second event of the meet in the 100 fly and Louisville broke two records in an upset win in the 400 medley relay.
With one day to go, NC State leads with 855.5, almost 80 points ahead of Louisville (778.5). Virginia Tech is holding down third with 614, but Notre Dame is lurking with 611. Florida State stands fifth with 524 points.
400 IM
Virginia Tech’s Robert Owen won his third-consecutive conference title in the 400 IM, pulling away from the field on the backstroke and eventually winning by more than two seconds. He finished in 3:38.43, moving to No. 4 in the country and breaking the ACC meet record of 3:39.33 set by Gal Nevo in 2009. Owen was just off Nevo’s ACC Record of 3:38.00, also from 2009.
North Carolina’s Henry Campbell finished second for the second time at the meet, touching in 3:40.88 in the 500. As he did yesterday in the 500 free, Campbell qualified first with a huge time drop in prelims before finishing second at night.
North Carolina put a a second swimmer on the podium as Michael Meyer touched third in 3:42.05. Meyer was well ahead of Louisville freshman Etay Gurevich, who touched fourth in 3:44.76.
NC State’s Anton Ipsen, the 500 free champion, finished in a blistering 24.45 but could not quite catch Gurevich, finishing in 3:44.77. Also swimming in the A-final were Louisville’s Keegan Foulke (3:46.86), NC State’s Adam Linker (3:47.45) and Virginia Tech’s Zachary Switzer (3:50.98).

NC State’s Ryan Held won his second race of the meet when he picked up the conference title in the 100 fly. As he did in the 50 free a day earlier, Held blasted his start and underwaters and quickly pulled away from the field, eventually finishing in 44.79, the fourth-fastest time in the country this season. Held now ranks tenth all-time in the event.
Joining Held on the podium were Louisville’s Josh Quallen, who finished in 45.56, and Held’s NC State teammate Andreas Vazaios, who touched in 45.81.
Notre Dame’s Justin Plaschka took fourth in 46.19, and NC State got another swimmer into the final as Coleman Stewart took fifth in 46.28. Two of Quallen’s Louisville teammates, Zach Harting (46.53) and David Boland (46.64), took sixth and seventh, respectively, and Virginia’s Bryce Keblish finished eighth in 46.70.

400 medley relay
NC State won the meet’s first three relays, but the Louisville Cardinals upset the Wolfpack in the longer medley relay to wrap up the evening. Louisville’s team of Grigory Tarasevich (45.11), Carlos Claverie (51.88), Josh Quallen (45.29) and Trevor Carroll (42.16) came in at 3:04.44, just ahead of NC State’s Andreas Vazaios (45.23), Derek Hren (51.91), Justin Res (45.38) and Soren Dahl (41.95), who finished in 3:04.56.
Louisville’s time of 3:04.44 was a new ACC record, clipping the 3:04.47 set by Florida State in 2014, and Tarasevich’s 45.11 leadoff split broke his own ACC record of 45.24 from last season. The Wolfpack and Dahl made a run at it, but Dahl did not have quite enough to catch up with Carroll.
Georgia Tech put toether a strong team of Rodrigo Correia (45.65), Moises Loschi (52.69), Ben Southern (46.02) and Noah Harasz (43.50) to take third in 3:07.86. Rounding out the top eight were Notre Dame (3:07.99), Virginia (3:08.32), Florida State (3:08.52), Duke (3:08.92) and Virginia Tech (3:09.01).
