2015 World Champion Marco Koch Out of European Championships; Full German Team Announced
The Nomination Committee of the German Swimming Association (DSV) has agreed by mutual agreement against a nomination of Marco Koch for the European Championships in Glasgow. Henning Lambertz, head coach swimming in the DSV, had the Darmstadt initially on the team after his National title over 200m breast (2:08.97). But the time suggested against the decision in the interest of the association.
After a long and intensive discussion, they finally decided against a European Championship nomination by Koch.
“The positive trend of Marco in recent weeks is clearly visible and is also reflected in the season’s best. However, his time of 2:08.97 is not sufficient for a subsequent nomination. He was here in Berlin prepared for the start. Thus, a further increase to swim close to medal can not necessarily be expected,” said Lambertz, who had repeatedly made it clear before the national championships that a subsequent nomination is only with outstanding individual achievements.
For this, times must be achieved with which you can swim in the European Championship for Germany for a medal.
This is the third big name to drop out of the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow. Koch joins Italy’s Gabriele Detti and Spain’s Mireia Belmonte as absentees from the Championships in eleven days.
One highlight for German Swimming however was 19-year-old Ramon Klenz. The Hamburg native had gone in Berlin prepared to possibly jump on the European Championships train. With his new German record over 200 m butterfly (1:55.76) he currently occupies third place in the European ranking list. Accordingly, he was later nominated for the European Championship on Thursday.

I am glad not being the man to decide this, really difficult situation. Waht a pity that Marco won’t seim in Glasgow but the probability to medal is maybe to small.
