Monona Grove Reigns Victorious at Wisconsin Division 2 State Swimming and Diving Championships

Division Two of the Wisconsin Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships competed tonight in Madison, Wisconsin, with the diving starting off the meet and the swimmers’ timed finals concluding the evening.

The one meter diving was won by Jeremy Moser from Nicolet, finishing with a score of 573.90. Close behind was Henry Carman from Monona Grove, scoring 571.25 points, while Spencer Peronto of Cudahy took third with a score of 467.55.

In the 200 yard medley relay, Grafton’s team of Bailey Bodart (24.57), Jack Senczyszyn (26.70), Sean O’Connor (22.32), and Adam Schacht (21.83) touched out Monona Grove’s Eric Storms (23.27), Bronz Geissler (27.60), Connor Keith (23.38), and Shane Sackett (21.55) for first, swimming times of 1:35.42 and 1:35.80, respectively. Taking third was the team from McFarland, consisting of Noah Schimanski (25.72), Joe Heiser (27.54), Dylan Bartuska (23.45), and Maxwell Donagan (21.15).

Sophomore Ben McDade from Monona Grove ran away, or rather, swam away with the 200 yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:40.61. Taking second was Shorewood’s Michael Perry with a time of 1:43.09, while third went to Grafton’s O’Connor, touching the wall at 1:46.04 right after his relay win.

For the 200 IM, it was Cedarburg’s Jared Nickodem taking gold with his time of 1:55.25. Heiser of McFarland placed second with a time of 1:56.21, edging out Ben Hayes from Brown Deer/University School of Milwaukee and his third place finishing time of 1:56.38.

The top seven in the 50 yard freestyle all broke the 22 second barrier, but it was junior Noah Larson from Baraboo who was the only one under 21 seconds, swimming a 20.78. Riccardo Romersi of Nicolet moved up into second with a time of 21.24, inching out Grafton’s Bodart and his finishing time of 21.27.

Grafton’s O’Connor picked up another victory in the 100 yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 50.72. Shorewood’s Perry took home another silver, touching at 51.59, and Whitewater’s Haoxiang (Benny) Liang placed third in 52.28.

The distance event of the night went to Monona Grove’s McDade, crushing the rest of the field by over 20 seconds in the 500 yard freestyle. McDade swam a new state record time, 4:30.12, breaking the previous record of 4:32.44 from 1995. Sam Raber from Whitefish Bay placed second in 4:51.45, while Kipp Dietrich moved up from sixth place to third with his time of 4:52.19.

The next event was the 200 yard freestyle relay, where Monona Grove claimed a state record by one hundredth of a second with the help of Erik Doll (21.66), Keith (21.61), Sackett (21.66), and McDade (20.87), teaming up to swim 1:25.80. Coincidentally, the previous record was also set by Monona Grove, where Sackett’s older brother was a part of the record-setting team in 2011. Shorewood moved up to place second, with Willem Van Den Kieboom (23.21), Joseph Lock (21.73), Lucas Barry (21.53), and Tommy Chamberlain (21.54) swimming a combined time of 1:28.01. Bronze went to McFarland’s Donagan (22.06), Alex Wolff (22.29), Adam Bennett (22.51), and Bartuska (22.04), touching the wall at 1:28.90.

The 100 yard backstroke was won handily by sophomore Storms from Monona Grove with a time of 51.03. Silver went to McFarland’s Heiser and his time of 52.38, barely ahead of Philip Fochios from Edgewood and his time of 52.51.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, it was Whitewater’s Liang who stole gold, finishing with a time of 58.64 and dropping over three seconds. Hayes from Brown Deer/University School of Milwaukee was right behind with a time of 58.89, while Zach Hammond from Shorewood touched the wall third, a tenth behind Hayes, in 58.99.

The 400 yard freestyle relay, the last event of the evening, went to Monona Grove once again. Doll (47.45), Vincent Giallombardo (49.39), Storms (48.26), and McDade (46.02) edged out the competition to finish with a time of 3:11.12. Shorewood slid into second, with its team of Perry (47.14), Barry (47.82), Henri Carignan (48.59), and Lock (48.34) touching at 3:11.89. Grafton earned bronze with a time of 3:12.61, made up of Jake Herlache (50.16), Charley Hanney (51.02), Bodart (45.81), and O’Connor (45.62).

Monona Grove went home victorious for the second year in a row, ranking first as a team with 296 points. Shorewood was runner-up with 251 total points, while McFarland edged out Grafton for third place overall by three points, scoring 216.

Division 1 will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the diving competition, while the swimming events will start at 3 p.m.
